97: How to Pick a Credit Card That Actually Works for You

97: How to Pick a Credit Card That Actually Works for You

Still swiping your debit card? You could be earning serious rewards instead. In this episode, Jessica and Brandon unpack how they use credit cards as intentional tools to build value—whether that’s free travel, cashback, or everyday perks that actually make life easier.

They explain how to choose cards based on what you’ll actually use, not what sounds flashy. For Jessica and Brandon, travel rewards are the priority—like the $1,500 they saved on a family trip to Panama using points from just one card. But if your goal is cashback on groceries, covering streaming services, or maximizing gas rewards, they show you how to pick the right card to match your lifestyle.

You’ll learn:

  • How they narrow down 10+ cards to just 2-3 for daily use
  • Why choosing flexible rewards beats loyalty to airlines or hotel chains
  • How to get the most value from annual fees (and when to avoid them)
  • The starter card features that matter for beginners
  • A game-changing tip for military members to access premium perks for free

If you’re ready to stop spending blindly and start making your money work for you, this episode breaks it all down—without the jargon. Press play and learn how to pick a card that actually pays you back.

00:00:00.221 --> 00:00:10.692
In today's episode, we talk about how to choose a credit card that's right for you, whether it's points or miles, or airline benefits, hotel perks we're going to dig into all of it.

00:00:10.692 --> 00:00:11.714
Stay tuned.

00:00:22.701 --> 00:00:24.387
Hey babe, what are we talking about today?

00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:28.422
Today we're talking about credit cards.

00:00:28.422 --> 00:00:33.252
We talk a lot about credit cards, I think we're going to think we're like credit card crazy.

00:00:33.652 --> 00:00:33.912
I know.

00:00:33.912 --> 00:00:42.598
Well, listen, there's so many benefits and I can't even tell you where my debit card is right now, because I literally don't know.

00:00:42.598 --> 00:00:48.165
I also very rarely carry cash, so unless I need to get cash out, I don't use my debit card.

00:00:48.165 --> 00:00:50.896
And we use our credit card for everything.

00:00:50.896 --> 00:00:55.725
I don't care if it's a $4 iced coffee, we use our credit cards.

00:00:55.725 --> 00:01:03.244
So one of the questions that we get often is how do we choose the credit cards that we use?

00:01:03.244 --> 00:01:06.593
And I don't know how many credit cards you have.

00:01:06.593 --> 00:01:08.987
I know that I have more than 10.

00:01:08.987 --> 00:01:16.087
And I actively use probably two, maybe three, depending on what the purchase is.

00:01:16.087 --> 00:01:22.799
However, for our day-to-day spending, brandon and I are both using the same kind of card.

00:01:22.799 --> 00:01:26.049
It happens to right now be the Capital One Venture card.

00:01:26.049 --> 00:01:30.948
We both opened it last year because we got the bonus points.

00:01:30.948 --> 00:01:35.765
I think it was 70,000, maybe even a little bit more than that.

00:01:36.807 --> 00:01:38.451
I think we opened them in like December.

00:01:38.859 --> 00:01:45.486
December when we purchased our cars, and the reason we went with that card is because we were already planning another international trip for Christmas.

00:01:45.486 --> 00:01:51.781
And we reason we went with that card is because we were already planning another international trip for Christmas and we didn't know exactly what airline we were going to be flying.

00:01:51.781 --> 00:02:06.554
We knew what location we wanted to be in, but we didn't know what hotel group, and so points made the most sense because points are flexible and so we didn't want to commit to a specific airline or a specific hotel.

00:02:06.554 --> 00:02:20.463
But you can use points for lots of things, and so we both opened this card and that is now the card that we're using for our everyday transactions, whether it's gas for Brandon, groceries, camp registrations, you know, et cetera.

00:02:20.463 --> 00:02:25.454
That is our daily card and we get two times the points on all purchases.

00:02:26.020 --> 00:02:37.152
However, there are opportunities, if you're again trying to be strategic, where you can basically activate certain offers and get five times the points, 20 times the points, et cetera.

00:02:37.152 --> 00:02:44.570
So I have too much going on mentally to be using multiple cards.

00:02:44.570 --> 00:02:51.659
Like, if you really want to play the game, well, you can use this card for gas and this card for groceries and this card for entertainment and this card.

00:02:51.659 --> 00:02:53.002
I don't have time for that.

00:02:53.002 --> 00:02:54.105
That's a lot for us.

00:02:54.105 --> 00:03:00.489
If you are doing that, you know, kudos to you, points to you, pun intended.

00:03:00.489 --> 00:03:02.736
I mean, I have friends who do that.

00:03:02.736 --> 00:03:14.936
They're very strategic and even sometimes you know they'll have like a little post-it note or a little like washy tape on that credit card that says gas card or grocery card, which that's a super smart way to do it.

00:03:14.936 --> 00:03:21.228
In my head, then that's also more bills quote unquote that you're paying right, more cards that you're keeping up with.

00:03:21.228 --> 00:03:27.582
If you have the mental capacity to do that, absolutely do it, because that is how you're going to maximize your points.

00:03:31.651 --> 00:03:32.432
All right, real quick.

00:03:32.432 --> 00:03:38.243
I want to speak to the person listening who feels like they can't work with a financial planner yet because they're carrying a lot of debt.

00:03:38.243 --> 00:03:41.314
First of all, I see you and I need you to know.

00:03:41.314 --> 00:03:43.222
You're not broken, You're not behind.

00:03:43.222 --> 00:03:44.605
You're just in a tough season.

00:03:44.605 --> 00:03:50.301
I created something just for you because I've had people reach out who are serious about changing their money story.

00:03:50.301 --> 00:03:54.231
But the full financial planning package just wasn't the right fit yet.

00:03:54.231 --> 00:04:00.847
So I built a new service through Oak City Financial that's focused completely on debt reduction no fluff, no shame.

00:04:00.847 --> 00:04:07.867
You'll get a one-time planning session, a personalized payoff strategy, your own financial dashboard and monthly coaching.

00:04:07.867 --> 00:04:13.187
If you want extra support while you climb out, it's $300 to get started and $100 a month.

00:04:13.187 --> 00:04:15.594
If you want that ongoing guidance, that's it.

00:04:15.594 --> 00:04:19.547
This is about helping you get unstuck, not making you feel like you failed.

00:04:19.547 --> 00:04:23.206
If this sounds like what you've been needing, go ahead and schedule a call with me.

00:04:23.206 --> 00:04:24.610
The link is in the show notes.

00:04:24.610 --> 00:04:31.456
Let's take the first step together.

00:04:35.639 --> 00:04:40.976
For us, we're trying to get you know certain amounts of points or miles at any given time, and so I really think the way to choose your credit card is to think about what you want to do.

00:04:40.976 --> 00:04:43.809
So let's say you want flights.

00:04:43.809 --> 00:04:49.341
Want to do so?

00:04:49.341 --> 00:04:49.982
Let's say you want flights.

00:04:49.982 --> 00:04:52.127
Let's say you want upgraded status on whatever airline you prefer to fly on.

00:04:52.146 --> 00:04:53.649
Maybe an airline card makes sense for you.

00:04:53.649 --> 00:04:58.827
Maybe you always fly American, maybe you always fly Delta, maybe you travel a ton for work.

00:04:58.827 --> 00:05:03.831
If that's the case, then maybe an airline or a hotel type card makes sense.

00:05:03.831 --> 00:05:28.675
But if you're not really traveling or you don't really know what you want to use those points and miles for, it might be better to get a card that is just a generic card where you're getting two or three times you know the points, and then you can cash those points in for travel, for airfare, for upgraded whatever, or in some cases, credit statements, right.

00:05:28.735 --> 00:05:42.569
So we booked a our trip for Christmas and we cashed in 150,000 points on our venture card in the travel portal and it gave us $1,500 back on the trip.

00:05:42.569 --> 00:05:53.603
So instead of the trip being you know forty five hundred dollars, we ended up paying right under three thousand, and we knew that we wanted to cash those points in for this family trip.

00:05:53.603 --> 00:06:15.456
And so, yes, one hundred and fifty thousand miles is a lot, but for us, saving fifteen hundred dollars is also a lot of money, and so, by having the flexibility of using I would say that how we choose our credit cards is primarily based around travel.

00:06:15.858 --> 00:06:18.754
Yes, travel is one of the things that we both thoroughly enjoy.

00:06:18.754 --> 00:06:32.536
Justin and I like having our own one-on-one time with each other, parent time by ourselves, taking our own trip separate, without the kids, and then we also obviously want our kids to have the experience, at such a young age, to travel the world as well.

00:06:32.536 --> 00:06:37.173
So how we choose the cards and which ones we use is all based around that.

00:06:37.173 --> 00:06:41.005
Now, with that being said, planning is involved.

00:06:41.005 --> 00:07:00.100
So, for example, we went to Panama last year for Christmas and we knew that we wanted to go ahead and start this as a new tradition where we're traveling somewhere abroad during Christmas time, and so we had already known this, like a year in advance, that, hey, we want to start focusing on which credit cards should we use to get the best bang for our buck.

00:07:00.100 --> 00:07:05.326
That'll help benefit us when we book our trip, because we're going to Jamaica this year for Christmas.

00:07:06.629 --> 00:07:10.877
And spending the least amount of money is obviously always the goal.

00:07:10.877 --> 00:07:18.291
So, if we can, you know, especially when we're traveling as a family of four plane tickets four plane tickets is a lot of money.

00:07:18.291 --> 00:07:20.819
When we flew to Panama it was $3,600.

00:07:20.819 --> 00:07:28.437
That was more than our six nights at the resort in Panama.

00:07:28.437 --> 00:07:45.850
It was more than double what we paid to actually stay on the resort and, and so this year, when we're thinking about flights, we're hoping to use those points to offset, hopefully, all of the cost of the four flights for this year's Christmas trip.

00:07:45.850 --> 00:07:50.197
Um, and so you really just have to plan ahead.

00:07:50.819 --> 00:07:58.608
One trip that I would absolutely love to take and we will need to save a ton of points is Costa Rica.

00:07:58.608 --> 00:08:03.497
The Four Seasons, papagayo, it's like very high on my list.

00:08:03.497 --> 00:08:07.310
The I mean, nightly points are just astronomical.

00:08:07.310 --> 00:08:21.415
So that's one of those things where, like, all right, we have the Amex Platinum card, we would book it through Fine Resort and Hotels, that collection, and we would probably need to save our points for two or three years.

00:08:21.415 --> 00:08:31.531
Which, if it got to that point, if we wanted to do it on points instead of paying outright, brandon and I would sit down and we would have a conversation, and by we would have a conversation.

00:08:31.531 --> 00:08:35.639
I would say, hey, switch to using this card for the next two years.

00:08:35.639 --> 00:08:39.793
Take all other cards out of your wallet with.

00:08:39.793 --> 00:08:44.836
This is what we're using, but we talk about why we're using that card strategically, et cetera.

00:08:45.785 --> 00:08:49.235
So you know, it really just comes down to what do you value?

00:08:49.235 --> 00:08:50.610
Where do you spend your money?

00:08:50.610 --> 00:08:55.177
Do you want statement credits, you know, so that your monthly bill goes down.

00:08:55.177 --> 00:08:58.933
Our thing with the credit cards is we're spending the money regardless.

00:08:58.933 --> 00:09:03.114
We have to pay for camp, we have to pay for groceries, you know we have to pay for gas.

00:09:03.114 --> 00:09:09.037
Whatever it is, you might as well be getting something for it, and if you're using your debit card, you get nothing.

00:09:09.037 --> 00:09:15.979
And so, regardless of what kind of card you choose, start with one that makes the most sense for you.

00:09:15.979 --> 00:09:27.706
And if it is, hey, I don't know what airline, I don't know what hotel franchise the points is going to be the easiest because you have flexibility, exactly so.

00:09:28.187 --> 00:09:30.971
We have points cards, we have miles cards.

00:09:30.971 --> 00:09:39.081
We have cards that we don't use often, except for some of the benefits that they offer, for example, the Amex Platinum.

00:09:39.081 --> 00:09:47.063
You know it's a very expensive card to have it's a $695 annual fee to even own the card.

00:09:47.063 --> 00:09:53.125
But it gets us into lounges when we travel, we enjoy the fine hotels and resorts collection.

00:09:53.125 --> 00:09:55.222
We get stays credit.

00:09:55.222 --> 00:10:00.336
I really enjoy my $50 every six months for Saks.

00:10:00.336 --> 00:10:06.940
That's where I get my favorite lip gloss from, because otherwise I don't typically spend $40 plus on a lip gloss.

00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:14.299
Shout out to Dior Also at the airport Lounge access no skipping the lounge.

00:10:14.520 --> 00:10:18.107
Oh, pre-check, global entry, all of those things.

00:10:18.107 --> 00:10:25.009
Those are benefits, certain memberships to our online subscriptions.

00:10:25.009 --> 00:10:31.995
I mean, you have to really decide what's important to you and then will you use those benefits.

00:10:31.995 --> 00:10:41.783
Because if you're spending $695 to have a card, if you're not getting at least $695 back in the benefits, then you are now wasting money.

00:10:41.783 --> 00:10:43.388
So you want to at least break even.

00:10:43.695 --> 00:10:50.880
Yeah, you got to make sure that you know exactly what all the benefits that are associated with that card before you even get the card.

00:10:50.880 --> 00:10:54.239
So you want to know what all the benefits are and, like, am I going to use all of these benefits?

00:10:54.239 --> 00:11:04.187
So, like she said, with the american american express platinum card that being 695 a year we know all the benefits that come with it and there are benefits that we would use anyways.

00:11:04.187 --> 00:11:13.541
So we already know that we're coming out on top because we're using all of those benefits and if we were to do that without the card, it's going to cost in excess of 695.

00:11:13.541 --> 00:11:18.500
Because, let's be honest, we are lounge people like especially when you like are traveling with kids.

00:11:18.500 --> 00:11:31.604
If you got some time to be there for the kids to have a little bit more space to spread out, get them some food, something to drink nice, clean bathrooms, yeah, I mean, we are definitely lounge people yes, and our kids are now too, because they enjoy.

00:11:32.105 --> 00:11:35.399
In panama, when we were in the lounge, they had like a little kids area.

00:11:35.399 --> 00:11:36.682
They had the movies playing.

00:11:36.682 --> 00:11:38.325
All the kids were hanging out in there.

00:11:38.625 --> 00:11:52.158
So, like I mean so, like you were able to, like I said, the one in Panama they were able to play in a nice, you know, separate room where we could see them with a bunch of other kids and have stuff to play with, while Jess and I can have a nice breakfast and had coffee.

00:11:52.679 --> 00:12:04.287
Yeah, we also that day we stayed, stayed at the W in Panama and they, you know, we had $100 on site credit because of that, because of how we booked it.

00:12:04.287 --> 00:12:19.928
So, you know, we had a beautiful breakfast there every morning that was free for us, as well as the $100 that we could use at the bar and in the restaurants, and so when we left, I think our bill after the two nights was like $29.

00:12:19.928 --> 00:12:27.159
And we had excellent food, excellent cocktails, beautiful accommodations, and so this is just listen.

00:12:27.159 --> 00:12:32.522
We work hard, we're getting older, I like what I like and I like those benefits.

00:12:32.894 --> 00:12:42.865
Like I said, and there's so many benefits, like, for example, even with the American Express Platinum, they have a concierge service, yes, where you can call in and have somebody help you schedule and set up things on your travel.

00:12:43.106 --> 00:12:43.326
Yeah.

00:12:43.815 --> 00:12:54.881
So I would say our top three cards that we have in the rotation, all depending on what type of trips we have coming up, is we're, like I said, we're currently using the Capital One Venture Card.

00:12:55.581 --> 00:12:58.604
And that one is only $95 annual fee.

00:12:59.443 --> 00:13:01.625
And we have the Chase Sapphire card.

00:13:02.206 --> 00:13:05.827
Yep, which we're not currently using and we plan to downgrade later this year.

00:13:05.827 --> 00:13:11.870
But Chase has great transfer partners and Hyatt has one of the best point redemptions that I've found.

00:13:11.870 --> 00:13:29.167
So if you are a person that likes Hyatt properties, using a like a Chase card like the Chase Sapphire, which also has a low annual fee, is a great kind of beginner card where you're just racking up and accumulating points and then you can use those to book your hotel stays.

00:13:29.655 --> 00:13:32.605
That's another good call that you have because you can downgrade and upgrade your cards.

00:13:32.605 --> 00:13:45.535
So once you have, like the highest level card, if you got that card specifically to use it for a trip that you have coming up and that's why you chose it you selected that card, you use it, but then say the following year you still have the card, but you're like, hey, like.

00:13:45.975 --> 00:13:47.597
I'm not going to really use it.

00:13:47.979 --> 00:13:50.361
I don't see the need to pay that fee to have that card.

00:13:50.361 --> 00:13:51.943
You can downgrade it to the next level.

00:13:51.943 --> 00:13:56.269
So you still have the card and then say, two years come, you know, into the future, you want to use it again.

00:13:56.328 --> 00:14:11.001
You can upgrade, upgrade, back up yes, and I think one thing that is important to note is if you're going to close a card with the idea that you might want to open it again in the future because of, you know, bonus points etc.

00:14:11.984 --> 00:14:18.066
A lot of the credit cards are getting much more strict on when you can actually get those bonuses.

00:14:18.195 --> 00:14:25.428
So I know there's a couple of cards out there where you have to not have been a cardholder for at least three years.

00:14:25.428 --> 00:14:27.743
Some of them go up to five years.

00:14:27.743 --> 00:14:51.187
So if you're opening and closing cards thinking that you're going to get these bonus offers all the way around, you need to double check to see when did you have that card, when did you close it and how long do you have to have that card closed in order to actually benefit from those bonus offers again, because you don't want to be opening cards with the idea that you're getting the bonus offers and then you don't get them because you don't actually qualify.

00:14:51.187 --> 00:15:08.091
So that is a call out, especially if you're a person who's starting to get into the kind of credit card points game is just because you close a card and you want to open it again six months later or a year later does not mean that you're going to qualify for those points or those miles or whatever that bonus is for that time frame.

00:15:08.556 --> 00:15:12.125
Also, closing credit cards can have a negative impact on your credit score.

00:15:12.774 --> 00:15:16.280
Yes, we have an episode on that, so be sure to check that out.

00:15:16.280 --> 00:15:18.359
Credit score yes, we have an episode on that, so be sure to check that out.

00:15:18.359 --> 00:15:22.087
You don't want to be opening and closing cards too much, but downgrading and upgrading cards makes a lot of sense.

00:15:22.087 --> 00:15:30.340
There's times where Brandon and I have had the exact same card and then I'll go and downgrade him if he was an authorized user.

00:15:30.340 --> 00:15:37.004
There's also times where Brandon will open a card using my referral code so that we both get some sort of bonus.

00:15:37.004 --> 00:15:47.609
If there's an opportunity for him to get a bonus because that's really the best way to get a big chunk of miles or points is when you get those bonus offers.

00:15:47.609 --> 00:15:51.541
Otherwise, it's much more difficult to actually keep accumulating those points.

00:15:51.541 --> 00:15:54.937
You know, two points per dollar at a time, whatever that might be.

00:15:54.937 --> 00:15:57.542
So those bonus offers really make a huge difference.

00:15:58.003 --> 00:16:03.164
But it really comes down to what do you value, where do you want to spend your money and how do you plan for it?

00:16:03.164 --> 00:16:20.905
And for us right now, it is always going to be travel, and so we're always thinking about our next destination, airlines, flights, where we want to stay, how we want to travel, and so that's how we decide on our credit cards, but you have a lot more protection using a credit card than you do a debit card.

00:16:20.905 --> 00:16:22.658
So that's an important call out.

00:16:22.658 --> 00:16:47.327
And if it all sounds a little overwhelming, choose a card that maybe has a great intro offer and a low annual fee, maybe something that's 95 or $99 and has a nice big bonus point attached to it, and then just let it sit there and use that card for your day-to-day spending until you realize what you want to do with those points, and then you can look at.

00:16:47.769 --> 00:16:55.825
There's a bunch of different resources out there that you can dig into to get the most bang for your buck, because not all transfer partners are created equal.

00:16:55.825 --> 00:17:01.542
Some of them will do a one to one point conversion one or one point one to 1.5.

00:17:01.542 --> 00:17:05.257
Again, you want to maximize your points as much as possible or your miles.

00:17:05.257 --> 00:17:08.843
So looking at those transfer partners and things is going to make a difference.

00:17:08.843 --> 00:17:12.188
But stockpile accumulate, you know.

00:17:12.188 --> 00:17:13.130
Have a plan.

00:17:13.130 --> 00:17:17.946
I think that's the most important thing is to plan for how you want to use those points or miles.

00:17:18.515 --> 00:17:28.266
And also, too, there are, you know, social media individuals out there that have great platforms that are focused 100% on 100% on points for credit cards.

00:17:28.266 --> 00:17:45.125
So they have done all the legwork for you and they have some free resources, and they also, I know some that have we have to pay a little bit and, honestly, some of them, the amount that they're giving you for what you pay Pays for itself, pays for itself as far as, from a time standpoint, having to figure all that out.

00:17:45.125 --> 00:17:47.564
So I would definitely recommend you utilize some of those.

00:17:47.564 --> 00:17:52.461
We have some episodes about that as well with ones that we would recommend, so we can link those in the show notes.

00:17:52.855 --> 00:17:56.681
Yes, but the points guy, straight to the points We've had Aunt Kara on.

00:17:56.681 --> 00:18:01.882
There's a lot of great resources, great free newsletters out there that can help you get started.

00:18:01.882 --> 00:18:23.220
One quick call out to leave you with if you are an active duty military member, you can get most of these fancy credit card annual fees waived, and that includes your Amex Platinum, so that $695 annual credit card you, if you are an active military member, can get that fee waived.

00:18:23.220 --> 00:18:28.415
So make sure that if you are active duty, you are not paying those credit card annual fees.

00:18:28.415 --> 00:18:36.248
That is an amazing way to get those credit cards, get those intro bonuses, get all the perks and you don't have to pay for the annual fee.

00:18:36.248 --> 00:18:37.333
So thank you for your service.

00:18:37.333 --> 00:18:38.737
Make sure you're taking advantage of that.

00:18:39.199 --> 00:18:42.386
And also just one other call out this is all on personal credit side.

00:18:42.386 --> 00:18:49.883
Yes, because there are various business credit cards that have different perks and maybe we'll do a future episode on those as well.

00:18:50.243 --> 00:18:53.884
Yeah, but hopefully this is a good place to help you get started.

00:18:53.884 --> 00:18:56.563
Find out what is important to you.

00:18:56.563 --> 00:18:58.161
